Being a rat owner, I follow a lot of rattie related things on Tumblr. I spied this argument going on within Samm’s tumblr about how she claims you can’t rehabilitate an aggressive rat… She states, verbatim,

Getting an aggressive animal fixed wont change the fact it was born with a non domestic gene”

All of my what at ‘non domestic gene’. There is no such thing as a ‘domestic gene.

This bothered me on a compassion level, a biology level, and on a rat owner level. She was asked why she wouldn’t give the time and love into rehabilitating one of her aggressive rats. Her solution to the aggressive rat was to ‘bring it back to the store’. An anon pointed out how she could have rehabilitated the rat rather than returning it, as returning an aggressive animal to a chain pet store (rat was from Petco or some shit) is basically a death sentence.

You CAN, in fact, rehabilitate an aggressive rat. I did so myself with my girl Maxine, who my followers on dA/fA/YT and here know about how she was one of my rescues, and came to me sick, abused, unused to human contact, and showed aggression. It took many, many months, and the introduction of two new rats, but she was successfully rehab’ed and enjoyed her life with me until the very last moment she was alive.

There is no such thing as a domestic gene.

There is no such thing as a domestic gene.

There is no such thing as a domestic gene.

There is no such thing as a domestic gene.

And seriously, why do people even get pets from places like Petco? You have no clue where the animals came from, how they were treated, how the parents of the animal were treated, whether it was a mill or a breeder. You have no idea. In all likelyhood, you’re supporting a mill of some type, thus supporting animal abuse.
